About Us

The Southeast Texas Association of Paralegals (“SETAP”, formerly known as Southeast Texas Association of Legal Assistants, “SETALA”) was founded in 1980 by four legal assistants, two of whom were Certified Legal Assistants (CLAs).  It is a professional association for paralegals and legal assistants in Southeast Texas.  SETAP is affiliated with the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) and the Texas Alliance of Paralegal Associations (TAPA).

Definition of a Paralegal/Legal Assistant

SETAP, for its purposes, uses the terms “paralegal” and “legal assistant” interchangeably.  The State Bar of Texas defines a “paralegal” as follows:

A paralegal is a person, qualified through various combinations of education, training, or work experience who is employed or engaged by a lawyer, law office, governmental agency, or other entity in a capacity or function which involves the performance, under the ultimate direction and supervision of a licensed attorney, of specifically delegated substantive legal work, which work, for the most part, requires a sufficient knowledge of legal principles and procedures that, absent such person, an attorney would be required to perform the task.

NALA Affiliate

SETAP is an affiliate of the National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA).  NALA offers a variety of CLE opportunities.  Feel free to check their website for upcoming CLE events, webinars, etc. at www.nala.org.
